REVIEW | ART Tube MP Original

Written by Cecil Lau Sunday, April 27, 2008

The Original Tube MP from Applied Research and Technology (ART) is a professional tube microphone preamplifier that turns a weak input signal to line-level while adding warmth to recordings. Primarily for microphone use, this little device can also be used for guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, samplers, and other instruments; excellent for recording studios and computer recordings.

Construction (7/10)

Enclosed in a smooth, slick, and cool solid black steel casing, this portable device weighs approximately 1.5 lbs. It definitely looks like a nice piece of professional audio equipment that any proper recording studio should have. The Tube MP initially feels cool until it warms up a little after five minutes. Prior to transportation, it requires a few minutes to cool down as the tube can break from sudden changes in temperature. The amplifier does not come with an on/off switch for those who like to conserve electricity when not in use. To turn it off, you would have to unplug it manually. Moreover, after connecting the XLR jacks, much force is necessary to remove them. The tight contact ensures the plugs stay in, but it also causes some flexing of the case. This is disadvantageous for those who will be moving the preamp around often. Despite these minor flaws, however, the Tube MP looks great and feels smooth and solid.

Features and Quality (8.5/10)

Inside, the 12AX7a vacuum tube provides up to 70dB of gain while maintaining a low-noise level and enhancing the sound quality by adding warmth. As a result, this tube is best for vocals and dynamic microphones. For those with condenser mics, this preamp is capable of providing +48 V of phantom power, which is standard. If you are using multiple microphones in close proximity, the Tube MP has a phase reversal switch to solve phase cancellation problems. Furthermore, it includes both XLR and 1/4" inputs and outputs, increasing microphone and instrument compatibility. Besides the input and output gain knobs, the clipping LED also helps with gain adjustments and monitoring. The LED stays green when the input is at optimal levels while turning orange at volume peaks. If it flashes red, it signifies clipping. Because it would be nearly impossible to perform recordings directly onto the computer using dynamic microphones, it is necessary to have a preamp that is able to increase gain and to maintain a low-noise level. There is a noticeable difference in sound between the use of the preamp and its absence. On the whole, the Tube MP does its job, in a quality fashion.

Conclusion ( 8 /10)

Overall, this product is perfect for those who are looking for a high quality preamp at an affordable cost. The functions included are best suited for home recording studios. Due to the extra warmth brought out by the tube, the ART Original Tube MP is highly recommended for amateur vocalists seeking the next level of recording.

The Original Tube MP retails for as low as $29.99.
