Ever since I could remember, Logitech has been one of the two most prominent computer peripheral manufacturers on the market. The most recent model of the company's corded gaming mouse series is the Logitech G9. Compudio Gadget Reviews has had a chance to get a hand on this gear, and would like to share some feedbacks on the Logitech G9, and in comparison to the G5, with our readers. In the attempt to eliminate repetitive information regarding the mouse, comments on general functionality and specifications will not be included.
Built Quality (8/10)
First off, the G9 is exceptionally well built. Included are the two interchangeable grips (Precision and Wideload). The smaller gaming grip has a textured plastic feel, and is intended for a non-slipping control of the pointer during gaming sessions. Swapping to the larger grip, the mouse becomes much more multi-purpose oriented. Comparing to the rough gaming mode, the Wideload grip has a much smoother rubber feel to it. From our testing, although the texture of the two grips made little difference on precision, size mattered as the smaller Precision grip was given preference over the Wideload for quicker maneuvering.
Moreover, the two side-buttons and scroll wheel are also placed in excellent positions for easy and clearly identifiable access. Unlike the placement on the G5, the DPI buttons are now relocated to the left side. Although they are positioned under the left mouse button, the two are in no way interfering. However, 2 points are deducted from the score due to the fact that unlike the left horizontal scroll, the wheel does not respond with a click when scrolling to the right. This may either be inconsistency in production or the nature of its design.

Feel and In-Use Experience (7.5/10)
Fire it up and take it for a shoot! The interchangeable shells and customizable weight make the G9 compatible for almost everybody (except lefties probably). Being the small size it is, the G9 is especially suitable for those with a small hand. Similar to the signature mouse design from Razer, the control of the G9 is very much finger-based -- meaning a smaller surface area to rest your palm on. For some, this can be fatiguing in extended gaming sessions. The stiff braided mouse cord can also be troublesome for times as it may get in the way of a clean playing field.
After many hours of usage and switching shells back and forth, we find that when swapping grips, the left and right mouse buttons can easily be triggered. However, assuming that you won't be switching them during intensive circumstances, this may not seem to be an issue at all.
Software (8.5/10)
G9 Logitech SetPoint is extremely simple to install and a pleasure to use. In the software, users can easily access the customization of their LED colors, DPI settings, and polling rates among various other features. You can also set the mouse to detect softwares and automatically switch to different profiles, indicated by user-defined colored LEDs. The G9 also has an onboard memory that allows users to store up to 5 different profiles. So the next time you use your mouse on a friend's computer, you will not have to reset your gear's sensitivity.
While the software interface is very simple-to-use, we still prefer the earlier version of SetPoint as we find a more graphics-oriented illustration much more enjoyable. Moreover, although companies often claim their superiority in having the latest laser technology (DPIs of over 4000 etc), I'd like to reiterate here that although the numbers sound catchy and pleasing, any DPI over 2000 is most likely unneeded.

G9 vs G5
If you're really enjoying your G5 and are looking for an upgrade, the G9 may not be the best candidate. The design and style between the two are completely different. As the profile shot indicates, the G5 is almost one third larger in size. The G5 is a palm-based mouse while the G9 (in both grips) is finger-based. In a sense, Logitech is wanting a piece of that mouse market, which has been dominated by Razer for some time. As such, if you're a fan of palm-based mice, the G9 does take a while to get used to. For many, the spanking new gear may even degrade your gaming performance in the first few hours of use.
Conclusion ( 8 /10)
The Logitech G9 is a well-rounded gaming mouse designed to attract both Logitech and Razer fans. It is not an upgrade to the G5, but an addition to the traditional palm-based Logitech gaming mouse series. The G9 has an edge over its competitors, mainly the Razer Lachesis, as it offers a much wider range of features and customizations. There are a few downsides to the product, but the positive definitely trumps the negative. If you're still deciding whether to go with Logitech or Razer, you can't go wrong with the G9.
